HCANJ, in collaboration with New Jersey Collaborating Center for Nursing (NJCCN), New Jersey Action Coalition (NJAC), Deans of Nursing and educators across the state, is creating a pathway for Registered Nurse students to have their clinical rotation in Nursing Homes. With workforce shortage that is not expected to recover until 2026, it is essential that we establish a nursing pipeline to ensure access to care for our seniors and improve outcome.

Here are some best practices to create a successful clinical rotation:
- Establish an RN clinical champion, who will be the “go to” for instructors and students.
- Provide engaging orientation training program and highlight shared expectations.
- Tour of facility.
- Provide a conference room for instructors and students to huddle.
- Involve students during Quality Improvement meetings for engagement.
- Plan ahead of scheduled rotations to meet clinical objectives.
- Identify resident acuity selection for hands-on experience based on clinical objectives.
- Be accessible and provide leadership support to instructors and nursing students.
- Discuss the unique and diverse clinical pathways/ladders offered in long-term care.
